summer journal comics: in my day…

Ellen and I worried a fair amount about letting Elliot watch even that much television, but I know for a fact that quite a lot of kids his age are watching hours and hours of television everyday! I don’t mind giving him some time watching stuff like Dora the Explorer or, his favorite by a wide margin, Disney’s Jake and the Neverland Pirates.

I don’t even mind him watching television for the sake of a good time- he’s fairly obsessed with The Muppet Show, as all smart children should be.

  1. Saturday morning cartoons used to be special. I also remember sitting in my house in the evening and running to the TV when I heard the “CBS Special” jiggle and hoping it was Charlie Brown or Toony Tunes. We had to wait for something good to come on.

Now, there is all day cartoons everyday. There is PBS Kids, Sprout, Disney, Disney XD, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, Nicktoons, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, The Hub, Qubo and a few smaller networks. All of those offer programing the internet or on your cable OnDemand menu. I too never had a VCR when I was a kid and tapes were expensive, however my kids have a library of shows including Baby Einstein, Leap Frog and other educational DVDs. It is not special anymore, just expected that it will alway be there.
