Olympics1

I 100% do not care about The Winter Olympics at all… especially this year,  where every event held out of doors seems to come with a caveat from the commentators about how the snow or ice is “extra slushy” because someone stupidly chose a coastal vacation spot in Russia with moderate temperatures for the games.

Having said that, I can at least try to get in the spirit with my chalkboard drawings.

Questions from Readers: Chalkboard Origins

I normally turn these questions into comics, but I racked my brain and couldn’t figure out a good way to talk about this in sequential art. Hopefully you’ll forgive my response thusly.

I started with the chalkboard drawings when I was a substitute teacher. I needed a quick, visually arresting way of getting students’ attention… as well as showing them I had a bit more of a vested interest in their world than many of the other subs working the building.

Here are a few examples of those drawings which are now TEN YEARS OLD.

…see, vintage early 2000’s there.

Eventually, I became known as “that sub who draws.” Students would find out their teachers were going to be at a conference or something and they’d say “Miss So and So, can you get the sub who draws?” That’s a nice calling card to have, especially as I was considering applying for a permanent position in this district. Ultimately I opted to move down to Brooklyn and work in urban schools, which has been my passion for awhile now.

(This is not a drawing of me, but rather a teacher/mentor who specifically requested being drawn as a witch. She was terrific.)

Sort of wending my way through the Marvel Universe, this was to be an X-Men week until a couple of things derailed it. Firstly, we had a snow day (or a cold day, or whatever) on Tuesday. Secondly, I decided to do a Super Bowl themed drawing on Friday… of a kind.

Most of my X-Men knowledge either comes from the mid 1990’s, either through the animated series on FOX or the cabinet arcade game (“WELCOME TO DIE!”)

Last week we did The Avengers… this week, I decided to his some of those solo Marvel Comics’ characters. I know I’ve done Spider-Man and Daredevil on the chalkboard in years’ past, but I’ve never had a go at Doctor Strange. He’s surprisingly fun to draw!

Thankfully, my laptop decided to comply, so I can present to you all a holiday themed week on my chalkboard. My choices were slightly upset by an unplanned snowday midweek, but you won’t hear me complaining.

The theme this week was, I’m a little embarrassed to say, inspired by a weird interaction I had over on the Reddit Teachers page. The Chalk Ink Markers I use for these things were donated by someone over there and I wanted to say “Thank you” so I posted a bunch of the chalkboard drawings over there.

This week, all Hanna Barbara characters! No drawing on Friday because I worked a fourteen hour day (my regular workday plus parent/teacher conferences) and I couldn’t get up the steam to work out a fifth HB drawing. I shoulda done Dirk Dastardly though…

Supes1

I decided on a Superman themed week based on enjoying doing a similar thing with Batman last year.Batman’s had a whole lot more recognizable iterations than Superman so…

Monday’s drawing is a take-off of the original Superman #1, originally published in 1939.
