Pearce Family Holiday Drawing 2016!

grinch

By now you probably know the drill – every Christmas, I draw our family into a holiday themed picture which then gets used as the X-Mas card we send out to our friends and neighbors. Truth be told, I already had a go at The Grinch six years ago but I was never happy with how that one turned out (too much yellow!) and the previous grinchy doodle was done BEFORE we started sending these out as holiday greetings so… yeah, natural do-over.

Yes, it’s The Pocket Book of Boners: An Omnibus of Schoolboy Howlers and Unconscious Humor, published in 1932 by the Readers’ League of America. This is the Armed Services Edition of this book. I picked this up for a quarter.

First of all… FANTASTIC TITLE BUT A BIT MISLEADING.

chalkboard drawings: the “i speak for the trees” edition

My drawings in a second, but first:

I noticed I have a compatriot in drawing chalkboards last week! My buddy Joe’s student teacher also occasionally throws elaborate chalkboard sketches up on her walls. I loved seeing this for a couple of reasons, but chief among them was how much it reminded me of my time starting out. The whole reason I started drawing on chalkboards was to grab my students when I was a newbie. Heck, I flat-out crutched on my limited artistic abilities when I was working as a teacher in Brooklyn and beyond. It was an easy way to let the kids know, “Here I am, here’s my personality, here’s what I can do.”

At any rate, I thought it was cool. If she draws any more, hopefully I can share them with y’all! Behind the cut… my scribbles.

chalkboard photo post #24

Although this is emphatically just a hobby for me, I have to admit… I get a little uptight about taking any self-imposed hiatus from posting. I’m not sure why this is, except that I’ve always prided myself a little on my ability to keep a schedule. “You may not like the comic,” I’ll think to myself, “but you can’t argue that I’m consistent.”

…but it was a good thing I took the week off, because damn. Stressful week. Next week my 10th grade students are taking the Ohio Graduation Test, which is stressful for them but sort of an easy five days for me. I spend the morning proctoring and the school runs on a two-hour delay schedule for the rest of the week. Meaning I see most of my classes for about 20 minutes before the bell rings and sends them off to their next 20 minute class.

All that’s just the long way around saying I’m back to posting comics and stuff… and thanks for being patient with me. This week’s chalkboard drawings (last week’s, now that I think about it) are behind the cut.
