Thrift Store Finds: Cincy Comicon Finds!

I’ve been posting stuff about the Cincy Comicon on my Tumblr all week and I thought I’d take today to post some of my comic book finds. Most people going to comic conventions have agendas they like to follow. Some folks are there to cosplay. Others are all about buying toys or art prints.

My agenda is to dig through longboxes and find cheap comics, both new and old. If I’m being honest, I was a bit disappointed with this con in terms of my finds – I try to concentrate on finding far-out weird stuff and there weren’t many of that to be had. Still, I did manage to bring a ton of funnybooks home with me, so I guess I can’t complain too much. Here’s what I picked up.

christmas comic cavalcade: extreme super christmas special (image comics)

This week, we’re looking at Extreme Super Christmas Special, published in 1994 by Image Comics.

Cover price was $2.95.

I was a bit leery of jumping back into the Image Comics waters after last year’s dreadful Gen 13: A Christmas Caper, but it’s the holiday season, right? It’s a time for making peace and moving on. I figured it was worth a shot… even though just typing the name of this comic makes me want to punch someone in the face. Extreme Super Christmas Special? Give me a break!

thrift store finds: a handful of modern era comic books

I don’t buy a lot of new comic books at thrift stores.

Please understand, “new” is a very flexible term when you’ve been reading comic books for twenty years. I define new as being anything published in the last ten years… but your mileage most certainly will vary on that definition. I don’t harbor many prejudices against the modern era of funnybooks; there have been some very awesome comics made in that time span. It’s just, as a personal preference, I don’t normally pick up stuff from that time period. They are books I had access to when first published. I passed on at the time, I don’t feel any particular need to pick them up now.

Recently, our local New2You Thrift Store received a huge collection of modern era comic books- most of ’em Marvel and DC. Somewhere mixed in between all the issues of Cable and Extreme Justice, I came across a couple of gems.

not teaching comics: sketchbook page

I haven’t been getting any actual comics done this week, but I did do a bunch of doodling in my sketchbook. Here’s a page.

I was just going through my current stack of comics and drawing some of the characters in them. I’m a big fan of The Muppet Show Comic Book that BOOM Studios has been putting out, especially when Roger Langridge is doing the art. I’m also really digging DC Comics’ Jonah Hex book… it’s the only “straight” superhero book I’m buying regularly right now, and I guess it’s not even a superhero book, really. I picked up Image Comics’ Invincible last week on a whim, but I usually stick to reading that in trades.

The Return of the Jedi speeder-bike is just something I felt like drawing. Elliot’s been playing with a lot of my old Star Wars figurines this month.
